Winter weather hits football fixture list

CLEAR skies and plummeting temperatures caused yet more disruption to the junior football schedule at the weekend, and also took out Clyde’s game for good measure.

Frozen pitches were the main cause for concern as temperatures ducked below zero degrees Celsius overnight and into the early morning.

In the SJFA West Region, only two of the 28 games scheduled across all leagues and competitions survived, but neither involved either United or Rangers.

Cumbernauld were due to host Shotts Bon Accord at Guy’s Meadow, in what would have been an intriguing joust between two teams who enjoy playing passing football.

But the weather was the only winner on this occasion, and United must now plan for this weekend’s trip to face second placed Ardrossan Winton Rovers at Winton Park.

Kilsyth Rangers were looking to put their Scottish Cup disappointment behind them by taking on old foes Thorniewood United at Duncansfield.

The two sides know each other well from last season’s battle for the Central District First Division title, which Kilsyth won by a narrow three point margin.

But, again, the playing surface was simply in too dangerous a state for the game to go ahead, and Rangers must now prepare for a trip to Showpark to meet East Kilbride Thistle.

Things were no better at Broadwood where the Bully Wee were due to face Berwick Rangers.

Jim Duffy’s men now have a long journey to Elgin to look forward to this Saturday.

Cumbernauld United Original Supporters’ Club bus for the game against Ardrossan on Saturday leaves Guy’s Meadow at 11.40 am and Town Centre at 11.45 am.
