Gritting concerns after milk truck smash

Readers got in touch with the News and Chronicle to express their concern over NLC’s gritting policy after we told how a milk truck had crashed due to icy roads in Seafar last week.
Adam Clarkson contacted us on our @NewsandChron Twitter account to say: “Reading story re milk truck crash, have to agree, NLC gritting policy is horrendous hardly any salt on any roads.
“On same day in question people trying to get to Croy station holding railings to stand up – just not good enough. No point in main roads being done when you struggle to get to them.”
SNP Councillor Willie Goldie said: “The council’s gritting policy seems to be set up for snow fall rather than rapid temperature drops on wet roads. Many of these accidents happened on side roads to residents travelling to work or on the school run. I requested that problem areas identified by residents be gritted.”
John Ashcroft, senior engineer with roads operations at North Lanarkshire council responded: “As the temperatures rose above freezing prior to mid-day on each day, secondary and other roads are not treated. Only when adverse conditions continue beyond midday would an action be called to treat these routes.”

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 05:48 PMi think north lanarkshire council needs to find a new senior engineer.temperatures will normaly rise above freezing prior to midday.but most people leave for work much earlier than midday and thats when they experience problems on the so called secondary roads. what a d**k. get of him and appoint somebody with common sence.jim
