Cumberauld minor injuries unit plans dropped

PLANS for a minor injuries unit in Cumbernauld have been scrapped.

The unit, planned as an upgrade to facilities at the town's Central Health Centre, was originally proposed as part of NHS Lanarkshire service reforms in 2006.

However, it was put on ice when the SNP won the Scottish Parliament elections and reversed plans to downgrade Monklands Hospital's Accident and Emergency unit.

But the plans for the minor injuries unit were officially scrapped by NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Tim Davison last week.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Cathie Craigie is trying to convince NHS Lanarkshire to reverse this decision.

She said: "We wrote to NHS Lanarkshire for information on the number from Cumbernauld and Kilsyth attending Monklands A and E.

"The figure was over 12,000 in an eleven-month period.

"It seems clear we could be better served if we had a minor injuries unit in the town, which would in turn take pressure off the A and E unit, so losing this is quite a blow.

An NHS Lanarkshire spokesperson said: "The decision in 2007 to retain full A and E services at Monklands Hospital meant that the development of the minor injuries unit at Cumbernauld was no longer in the first phase of priority developments for NHS Lanarkshire."

The spokesperson said that given the economic position the health board had some difficult decisions to make and at this point in time there were no plans to develop a minor injuries unit in Cumbernauld.
