A CUMBERNAULD councillor has attacked North Lanarkshire Council for carrying out standard repairs in the Town Centre and calling it “regeneration”.

SNP member Tom Johnston made the claim at the most recent Local Area Partnership meeting.

The LAP meets to discuss issues pertinent to Cumbernauld and Kilsyth. Councillor Johnston raised the issue to members of North Lanarkshire Council, who were delivering an update on the progress of work to refurbish the town centre.

He said: “The Cumbernauld Town Centre action plan seems to have been going on all the time. It’s the same agenda.

“This is basic road maintenance we are talking about, not regeneration.”

But Councillor Johnston’s comments provoked an angry reply from the convener, Labour councillor William Hogg, who said he would “not be satisfied, regardless of what the council did.”
