Preventers set to rock Glasgow’s Classic Grand

The Preventers on stage

A YOUNG band from Cumbernauld is looking forward to a busy year ahead, after opening 2012 with their first headline gig at the Classic Grand, Glasgow.

The band members all attended Greenfaulds High School or Cumbernauld College when they formed The Preventers.

Even though all are still in their teens they have a passion for classic soul music as well as more recent artists like Paolo Nutini, John Martin and John Mayer.

Frontman Sonny Leto said: “My father is Pino Leto, who is from Sicily and was a pretty famous musician in Italy, featuring on all the main TV channels. But he gave that up to come to Scotland with my mother.” With such a musical pedigree, it is hardly surprising that Sonny inherited this talent and passion for music.

Fast forward to today and with Sonny in the Preventers are Grant McConnell (rhythm and vocals), Jamie Edwardson (bass and vocals), Scott Flanagan (drums), Rosie Jenkins (alto sax) and Scott Girvan (tenor sax). Sonny added: “We look back to Fifties rock and roll because while we like more modern, heavy rock nobody really dances to it. We want to bring the jive back.”

They are hard at work preparing new material for recordings and also have gigs lined up - in Glasgow, they will play Nice ‘n’ Sleazy and Stairway in March, while they also have a Falkirk date coming up, which will see them take over Gambero Rosso Italian restaurant - one of the restaurants where Pino plays - on Tuesday, February 28.

The restaurant will be cleared out for the night and converted into a music venue. Tickets will cost £6 – get them from band members, via the band’s Facebook group or on the door. Also, their debut recording, The Free Livin’ EP, is available to purchase as a CD (£2) or download from.soundcloud.com.

The Preventers are also confirmed for two gigs in Glasgow - March 11 at Nice ‘n’ Sleazy (free entry, with The Rudiments) and March 23 at Stairway. This is for ages 14+ and entry is £6.
